Oakwood Cemetery ...
the painter stands by his easel,
looking at his canvas,
studying the shaded landscape before him;
a brook-fed pond covered in floating lily-pads,
rolling woods dotted here and there with headstones.
Ready to pack up - the work complete,
when like an automaton
he mixes several colors on the palette,
selects a brush and begins to paint;
adding the outline of a stone arch bridge
spanning over the hollow,
filling the rails with repeating fleur-de-lys designs;
while beneath the fringes of overgrowth,
the remains of ancient abutments lay eroding,
unknown to the painter.
