Purple Cows

At a soda fountain, a "Purple Cow" was made with grape pop and ice cream. At a bar, a "Purple Cow" was made with grape juice and vodka. The controversy that effectively ended the career of the once-celebrated writer of whimsical, yet wholesome poems for children started with the confusion over which he was serving to the youthful fans he had invited to visit his secluded cabin.

Reinterpreted through our modern sensibilities, though, particularly our current concern over childhood obesity, would it truly have made much difference? Really, what would have been worse: making them drunk? Or making them diabetic?
