The Letter

It was a day like any other day.

Bright. Fresh. Promising.

It was a letter like any other letter.

Standard. Manila. Window envelope.

It was a moment like countless others that had gone before - was it the electricity bill which was always a week late? Another letter of demand from the ongoing mess of a hire purchase contract gone sour? Yet another loan company enticing the average-income breadwinner with the oh-so-tempting sixty month payback deal?

One common thread fed the rumor mill.

Nobody could pry the crumpled sheet from her tightly-clenched fist, as they escorted the blank-eyed, zombie-like figure out of the house.
